JOS

After Katsina, we moved from the North to the center of Nigeria. Our first stop was Jos, a city famous for its plateaus and cool weather.

By now we were over our nervousness and actually getting into the groove of our workshops. The participants at our Jos workshop were drawn heavily from the academic community- Jos has a major university (the University of Jos), several polytechnics and think tanks. It was interesting to watch for the commonalities and differences within the NGOs from state to state.

But now we were also somewhat tired, as our pace had been relentless— 3 states, 3 workshops and about a dozen site visits in one week! Consequently, we didn’t conduct any site visits in Jos and opted to spend our second day at the zoo (where most of the animals had died of malnutrition) and at the Museum of Nigerian Art (one of the best in the country).

The pictures of the traditional huts and palaces (PICTURE 1) were taken at the museum where an affiliated institute is conducting some wonderful research on how to improve on the use of Nigeria’s red clay in constructing modern African Architecture.
