KADUNA

In Kaduna our workshop started at exactly 9 a.m, a clear difference from Kano, where community organizing was relatively new and was something people did in addition to their professional work. In Kaduna, the NGO/CBO was better established and thriving.

Our workshop and site visits went really well with participants from a wider range of organizations including the media in attendance.

Another stop, more wonderful experiences!

Most of our site visits in Kaduna were within the state. However, one of the participants was a drama teacher at Ahmadu Bello University who had developed a program linking students at the University to local communities in developing guerrilla theater/grassroots theatre for social change. We had to see this!

So we traveled for an extra hour and a half out of Kaduna into Katsina (the neighboring state) to a community called Funtua where a social club of women and men had created a sanctuary for women and girls which devleoped drama skits promoting progressive social ideas (PICTURE 2)

The members of the social club were incredible and were doing so very much for their own empowerment with so very little. One of the most beautiful expressions of hope that we had during the entire trip was the manner in which young girls were given space to explore their creative abilities and contribute to the growth of the club.
