Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) develops the leadership potential of young women and promotes their political and social participation in Nigeria. KIND works with stakeholders to bring women to the forefront so that their leadership potential can be activated and help shape public priorities and debates. Kudra, KIND’s main leadership program, develops and promotes a new generation of women leaders to act as leaders in their communities and participate effectively in forging a strong democracy in Nigeria. KIND currently serves 3,250 young women in five Nigerian universities in five of the country’s six geopolitical zones. EMpower’s second year of support is enabling KIND to build the skills and confidence of young women to deal with a patriarchal society, act as leaders in their communities, influence other young women towards empowerment and participation, and ultimately, increase the representation of women in positions of power.
The Clean Water in Every Home project enabled at least 12,000 new households to purchase and use low-cost water filters to produce clean drinking water in their homes. IDE worked with local manufacturers, distributors and retailers who will continue to provide new and replacement filters as long as the demand exists.
So far the project has seen impressive results. A recent study indicated that diarrhea, a leading cause of death among children, was reduced by 46% among users of the water filters.
