In order to foster an empowered population of young women, in November 2002, KIND introduced the Young Women's Leadership Development Program. June 4th Awards Program

Hafsat Abiola
The June 4th Program, held on the anniversary of Kudirat Abiola?s assassination, highlights and celebrates women leaders who work to strengthen democracy and development in Nigeria. The inaugural program honored Dora Akunyili, the Director General of Nigeria's National Food and Drug Commission, and Kemi Nelson, former Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs. The program also provided a forum for each woman to reflect on women's leadership in Nigeria. Dora Akunyili's paper was published in the Vanguard, one of Nigeria's national newpapers with the largest circulation among women.

Hafsat Abiola
Dora Akunyili
Dora Akunyili, one of the women honored, is now famous in Nigeria for the successful campaign she waged against fake drugs that were flooding the local pharmaceutical markets. For her work, Dora received Transparency International's Integrity Award, also in 2003. However, her work also made her more vulnerable: in December, she survived an assassination attempt, laying bare the danger that nips at the feet of those that seek to make a positive difference in Nigeria.

Leadership Development Workshops and Projects

NATIONAL YOUTH SUMMIT

In February, KIND co-convened the National Youth Summit where over 100 young leaders from around the country gathered to review and suggest amendments and implementation priorities to the National Draft Policy for Youth, a document sponsored by the federal government. The youth also attended seminars on conflict resolution/prevention, health, employment, good governance and the environment and in breakout sessions discussed strategies for raising awareness in their communities and across the country on these issues. The Canadian Commission in Lagos as well as State Governments supported this project.

NATIONAL YOUTH FORUM

As a follow up to the Summit, KIND seeks to convene a small focus group of young leaders working on diverse issues and in different parts of the country to examine the thematic issues from the Summit and, through presentations from experts and the youths themselves, begin to develop a clear understanding of the issues and propose solutions.

YOUNG WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Will offer gender and development education, management and organizational development training, and media (radio and photojournalism) training to women aged 18-25. As part of the program, the students develop radio programs and campaigns on HIV/AIDS, female genital mutilation and other development issues.

ANNUAL MEDIA AWARD

A young journalist selected by an independent panel of distinguished journalists is given a monetary award and a laptop and printer.

Education & Health

KIND’S ORPHANAGE PROJECT

KIND is developing a case for sustainable support of orphanages to be presented for various groups of Nigeria’s Diaspora. The case will identify interventions that could most effectively support the growing number of children and youths in orphanages across the country, emphasizing educational support. Possibly, KIND may help interested sponsors to set up a pilot project in Lagos.

YOUTH SECTOR OF THE AFRICAN/AFRICAN-AMERICAN SUMMIT

The largest gathering of African-Americans to the continent, the AAA Summit will bring together 10,000 people (half of them African-Americans) to Nigeria in 2002. As the Nigeria-based partner on the coordinating committee of the Youth Sector, KIND will be coordinating logistics and developing sessions on Employment and Health.

HIV/AIDS WORKSHOPS

KIND co-organized a meeting of HIV/AIDS workers in Africa held in Benin from May 23-24th. The meeting was used to assess prevention methods, develop new campaigns and establish a network of youth to address HIV/AIDS in Africa. The World Bank Institute webcast these sessions into 5 other African countries and the United States.

YW Magazine

KIND publishes a bi-monthly magazine that provides information on events in the NGO community as well training opportunities and conferences for youth .
